How to choose the right ladder for your needs

Whether you’re a trade customer looking for a range of products to equip your team or a keen DIYer looking to upgrade your trusted indoor ladder, it’s important that you consider a range of factors to ensure you select the right product for your needs.

What are five factors to consider when
choosing a ladder?

  • Material
  • Height / length
  • Load capacity
  • Weight and portability
  • Additional accessories

Material

Before choosing a ladder, it is important to be aware of different ladder materials and the impact they have on how and where you use your ladder. We stock aluminium, fibreglass, steel and timber ladders.

Aluminium ladders are generally the most lightweight and have a resistance to weather conditions, moisture and corrosion.

They are more affordable than some other ladder material types, making them strong and durable choices for most domestic and industrial projects. However, as they can conduct electricity, they should not be used for electrical work.

Fibreglass ladders do not conduct electricity, and means that they are ideal for electricians and most electrical applications. You should always choose fibreglass ladders  where electrical hazards exist.

Steel ladders are well-suited for heavy duty projects. However, they are heavier than aluminium and not resistant to moisture and corrosion, and they also conduct electricity. Explore our steel ladders here.

We supply timber ladders, which are often purchased for aesthetic purposes in libraries, bookshops, and restaurants. Explore our timber shelf step and Timber Library Ladders here.

Height / length

Do you need a compact and practical ladder to access higher shelves in a storeroom? Or do you need an extension ladder to reach roofs, eaves, windows or second storeys?

Consider the purpose of the ladder and how you wish to use it. This will help you determine the maximum height you should choose.

Load capacity

Importantly, we recommend checking the load capacity when browsing ladders for sale.

The duty ratings of a ladder are categorised into Industrial and Domestic. Industrial duty rating means the ladder is suitable for Industrial use with a minimum load capacity of 120kg and can go up to 200kg. Domestic duty rating means the ladder is suitable for domestic use with a minimum load capacity of 100kg.
You should also take into account the weight of any tools required when working at height, too.

Workplaces in Australia require ladders with Industrial duty rating and at least 120kg load capacity.
