What is an extension ladder?

A fibreglass or aluminium extension ladder is a type of ladder that provides a method for accessing hard to reach spaces. An extension ladder is adjustable and consists of two sections, each made of styles and several rungs that can be raised (extended) or lowered in order to adjust the overall length of the ladder and as such, the reach.

Extension ladders can be manufactured using different materials (including aluminium, fibreglass and timber), the rungs can be riveted, swaged, or glued and they range in size from 7’/12′ (2.1m/3.6m) all the way through to 20’/37′ (6.2m-11.1m). We sell a range of ladders with various load ratings.

Some models have round rungs while others have flat D-shaped rungs, and there is also an extensive range of accessories suitable for most models, including levellers, pole straps, cable hooks, and more.

What is an alternative to an
extension ladder?

These ladders can operate in both step ladder mode and an extension ladder mode. These ladders are more versatile for indoor and outdoor usage.

The overall extension ladder heights are generally smaller for this type of ladder, so if you need to reach beyond about 14’ or 4.2m then an extension ladder is a better alternative. If you are looking for an aluminium dual-purpose ladder that is ultra-versatile and easier to store, this might be the right alternative.

Telescopic ladders can be used in multiple formats such as step ladders, extension ladders and trestles, and at various heights.

They can be used on stairs or slopes, flipped open to act as an extension ladder or even split into two trestles (yes, all in the one ladder!) we encourage you to check out the range of WAKÜ Telescopic Ladders.

When using an extension ladder, you must ensure there are two solid ground support points in addition to the top support. Ladder levellers can be utilised to ensure equal rail support when working on uneven surfaces, and ensure that the ladder is more stable.

You must always ascend and descend the ladder when facing forward (ie. towards the ladder) and never while facing away from it.

There are various extension ladder accessories that can be used to improve the safety of the ladder. These include LadderStoppers, Wall Stand-offs, pole straps, removable walk through handrails, and level-eze.

The ‘4 to 1’ rule

There’s a general rule that many people are familiar with called the ‘4 to 1’ rule. The premise is simple: for every four feet of height a ladder extends, the base of the ladder should be one foot away from the wall.

For example, if you are using an extension ladder to reach a height of 12 feet, the base of the ladder should be no more than 3 feet from the wall.
