Extension Ladder Safety and Use Guide

April 17, 2025

An extension ladder is designed to reach high places by extending in length. It consists of two sections that slide and lock into place, allowing the ladder to be adjusted at various heights.

Key Features:

  • Two-part design: Includes a base section and a fly section that extends upwards.
  • Adjustable Height: Can be extended to reach rooftops, gutters, or tall walls.
  • Requires support: Must lean against a stable surface like a wall or building.
  • Locking Mechanism: Uses a rope pulley system and locking clutch.

The most common accident on an Extension Ladder is a fall due to improper use or setup. Follow our guide below for best practices for ladder safety.

This guide includes:

  • Pre-climb inspection checklist.
  • Step-by-step setup instructions.
  • Best practices for ladder safety.
  • Links to recommended accessories.
  • Step extension Ladder vs Extension Ladder.

Before you use your Extension Ladder check:

  • Rungs: Look for cracks and loose or bent rungs.
  • Stiles: Check for straightness and cracks.
  • Rope and Pulley: Ensure that the rope has not frayed, the tension is correct and the pulley is working correctly.
  • Clutch and all Latches: Engage correctly.
  • Feet: Check for wear.
  • Accessories: Fitted correctly and in good working order.

How to set up an Extension Ladder

1. Position the Ladder

  • Look Up!! Ensure no overhead dangers exist, like power lines.
  • With help if needed, lift the ladder vertically and lean it against the wall.
  • Ensure the feet are secure and the surface is level. Use a ladder leveller if needed.

2. Extend the Ladder Safely

  • Locate the rope and pulley system.
  • Use the rope to raise and extend the ladder (the movable (fly) section).
  • Raise it to the desired height, ensuring it extends at least 1 metre above the roofline if accessing the roof.
  • Use the 4:1 rule: For every 4 metres of height, place the base 1 metre out from the wall.

3. Lock the Rungs

  • Once extended, allow the locking clutch to engage to secure the fly section in place.
  • Double-check that the clutch is fully engaged before climbing.

4. Secure the Top Ladder

  • Use ladder extension accessories such as a head rope, ladder stabilisers or a gutter hooks to secure the top of the ladder to a solid structure.

5. Secure the Base of the Ladder

  • Use a Ladder Stopper or tie down the base to prevent Ladder from moving.

How to Use an Extension Ladder Safely

Follow these best practices for ladder safety:

  • Always face the ladder and maintain 3 points of contact.
  • Don’t carry tools in your hands; use a tool belt or hoist.
  • Never overreach: keep yourself centred between the stiles at all times.
  • Keep the ladder away from doorways and walkways.
  • Use a Fibreglass Ladder where electrical hazards exist.

Extension Ladder Storage Advice

The proper way to store an extension ladder is to house it in a dry covered area, horizontally or on wall hooks.

Step Extension Ladder vs Extension Ladder

An alternative to the Extension Ladder is the Step Extension Ladder.

Advantages of a Step Extension Ladder:

  • Works as both an A Frame Ladder and an Extension Ladder.
  • No need for wall support in the A Frame position.
  • Compact and Portable.
  • Converts easily between modes with a built-in hinge and rung lock.
  • Extends easily rung by rung.
  • Can be used inside and outside.

Limitations

  • Height range is shorter than an extension ladder.
