Ladder Shop FAQ

Product & Safety Questions

There are many types of ladders, each designed for specific tasks and environments.

For safety and comfort, it’s important to use the right ladder for the job. At Ladder Shop, we stock a huge range of high-quality ladders. Here is a breakdown of the most common types of ladders to help you choose the right ladder.

  1. Step Ladder (A-Frame)

Use: General-purpose, ideal for indoor tasks like painting and changing light bulbs.

Features: Self-supporting. foldable, stable.

  1. Extension Ladder

Use: Reaching high places like rooftops, second- or third-story buildings, or tall walls.

Features: Non-self-supporting, needs to lean against a surface, adjustable length.

  1. Platform Ladders

Use: Tasks requiring prolonged standing at height are often used for painting, electrical work, or construction.

Features: Wide platform for standing and working comfortably with a safety rail. Accessories such as castors, safety gates, and tool trays can often be added. Can be folded for storage.

  1. Single Straight Ladder

Use: Simple access to heights. Often used on scaffolding and with roof hooks as a roofing ladder.

Features: One fixed length; must lean against a surface.

  1. Multi Purpose Ladder

Use: Versatile for various tasks, can be used as a step ladder or extension ladder, can be used on stairs and separated to create trestles.

Features: Mounted in the ceiling to access the attic, foldable access steps.

  1. Mezzanine Ladder

Use: Accessing mezzanine floors or elevated storage

For Two-Story Homes

If you have a two-story house, you may need an extension ladder to reach your gutters.

Extension Ladder (7-10m)

  • The ladder must extend at least 1 metre above the eaves. This provides safer access to the roof.
  • Ensure that your ladder complies with Australian Standard AS/NZS 1892
  • Choose an appropriate Load Rated Ladder –  calculate the total load, including your weight, tools, and materials.

Checklist for Selecting the Right Ladder for Home Use:

  1. Determine the primary use of the ladder:
  • Indoor tasks (painting, changing light bulbs)
  • Outdoor tasks (cleaning gutters, reaching rooftops)
  • Versatile use (both indoor and outdoor)
  1. Consider the height requirements:
  • For single-story homes, a step ladder or multi purpose ladders may suffice.
  • For two-story homes, an extension ladder (7-10m) is recommended.
  1. Choose the appropriate material:
  • Aluminium: Lightweight, rust-resistant, and affordable (not safe for electrical work).
  • Fibreglass: Nonconductive (ideal for electrical work).
  1. Check the load rating:
  • Household (Domestic) 100 kg
  • DIY/Industrial: 120 kg
  • Professional/Heavy Trade 150 kg–200 kg

  1. Ensure compliance with safety standards:

Ensure the ladder complies to Australian standards ASNZS/1892

  1. Consider Additional Features:
  • Height adjustability
  • Foldable for compact storage
  • Accessories available
  1. Evaluate the ladder’s stability, strength, and safety features

Non-slip feet

  • Locking mechanism, strength of ladder stiles, arms, and treads.
  1. Budget considerations
  • Determine your budget and find a safe ladder that meets your needs.

By following this checklist, you can select the best ladder for your home use, ensuring safety and efficiency for various tasks.

Our ladders are compliant with Australian standards and European standards.

Australian Standards AS1892 covers portable ladders, specifying:
Material requirements, Load Ratings, design, and construction

How to Avoid Injuries While Using a Ladder

1. Choose a Compliant Ladder

Ensure it meets AS1892 standards

2. Inspect before Use

Look for cracks, loose rungs, and worn feet.

If damaged, tag it out and contact our repairs team for assessment and certified parts.

If in doubt, contact us.

3. Stable Placement

4. Climb Safely

  • Always face the ladder when climbing.
  • Use both hands to grip rungs or stiles.

5. Stay Centred

  • Keep your body within the ladder’s side rails.
  • Avoid leaning or overreaching.

6. Maintain Three Points of Contact

Avoid removing more than one foot or hand grip at one time.

7. Do not Exceed Load Limit

Do not exceed the ladder’s rated capacity, including body weight and tools.

We stock a variety of different load-rated ladders. Australia uses a specific duty rating to indicate the maximum weight capacity. The capacity includes the weight of the user and any equipment or tools. To be compliant, the ladder should have a clear load rating label.

The duty rating is assigned by the manufacturer based on product design and testing.

There are two duty ratings:

  • 100 kg-120 kg Domestic Rating
  • 120 kg and above Industrial Rating

Only ladders with an industrial rating can be used in the workplace.

Exceeding the load rating is dangerous and voids the warranty.

Yes, we do sell ladders suitable for commercial and industrial use.

Here’s a quick overview of what sets our ladders apart:

  • Trusted Brands Only: We stock ladders from manufacturers known for quality, durability, and compliance.
  • Repair Expertise: As certified ladder repairers, we understand what makes a ladder safe and long-lasting.
  • Test and Tag: We offer a ladder inspection program that includes a safety report on your ladder and recommended repairs that can be carried out on-site or at our warehouses.
  • Industrial Rating: Our ladders are available in 120kg to 200kg load ratings and comply with standards.

Expert Advice: Our trained staff can help you choose the right ladder for your job.

A standard ceiling height in Australia is typically around 2.4 to 2.7 metres (8 to 9 feet). To safely and comfortably reach these heights, we recommend:

Recommended Ladder Options for Standard Ceilings

  • 1.8m Step Ladder (6 steps) – Ideal for ceilings up to 2.4m
  • 2.1m Step Ladder (7 steps) – Suitable for ceilings up to 2.7m
  • 2–3 Step Platform Ladder – With a platform height of 0.6m to 0.9m, perfect for tasks like:
    • Changing light bulbs
    • Painting walls
    • Cleaning or decorating

Platform ladders offer the added benefit of a stable standing surface and a high guardrail, allowing you to work with both hands free, ideal for longer tasks or when using tools.

Things to Consider When Buying a Ladder

Choosing the right ladder isn’t just about grabbing one off the shelf. It’s about matching the ladder to your task, space, and safety needs. Here’s what to think about:

  • Ceiling height
  • Type of task (e.g., painting, electrical, cleaning) – Intended load for the ladder
  • Storage space available
  • Frequency of use and user comfort

Many customers mistakenly believe that Fibreglass Ladders are stronger and lighter than Aluminium Ladders, but that is often not the case.

Here’s a simple breakdown to clear up the confusion.

Key Clarification:

  • Heavier Fibreglass ladders are not necessarily stronger.
  • Strength and Stability come from design such as:
    • Cross-brace structure
    • Base width
    • Material thickness and alloy quality
Outdoor Use of our Ladders

Yes, our ladders are suitable for outdoor use. We stock products from manufacturers known for their quality and durability.

Aluminium Ladders

Highly recommended for outdoor use due to their resistance to rust and corrosion.

Lightweight and long-lasting, making them ideal for frequent outdoor tasks.

Best choice unless you specifically need a Fibreglass Ladder for electrical work.

Fibreglass Ladder

Required when working with electrical sources due to their non-conductive properties.

We carefully select only high-quality fibreglass ladders that are built to withstand the harsh Australian climate and manufactured with the best-quality Fibreglass to resist splintering and reduce the risk of skin irritation, ensuring long-term safety and comfort.

Maintaining your ladder properly is key to ensuring its safety, longevity, and performance. Here are the best practices for long-term ladder care:

  1. Store Properly
  • Store ladders in a dry, covered area away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Avoid storing heavy items on top of ladders to prevent warping
  1. Clean Regularly

Clean your ladder of any dirt, paint, chemicals, or moisture

  1. Inspect Before and After Use

Check for:

  • Cracks, dents, or bends in the frame
  • Loose or missing rungs, bolts, or rivets
  • Worn or damaged feet, frayed and broken rope
  • All labels and load ratings are visible and legible
  1. Lubricate Moving Parts

Apply a light lubricant on hinges, locks, and pulleys on extension or multi-position ladders to keep them functioning smoothly

  1. Avoid misuse
  • Don’t exceed the ladder’s weight rating
  • Never use a ladder for unintended purpose (e.g., a scaffold or bridge)
  • Avoid dragging ladders
  1. Schedule Regular Professional Inspections

Usage & Installation

Setting up a ladder safely is crucial to prevent falls and injuries. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you do it right:

How to Safely Set Up a Ladder

  1. Choose the Right Ladder
  • Use the correct type and height for the job.
  • Ensure the ladder is rated for your weight and tools (check the duty rating).
  • For electrical work, use a fibreglass ladder (non-conductive).
  1. Inspect Before
  • Check for cracks, loose rungs, bent rails, or worn feet.
  • Make sure all locks and hinges are working properly.
  • Clean off any mud, oil, or debris.
  1. Set Up on Stable Ground
  • Place the ladder on a flat, level, and firm surface.
  • Use ladder levellers or stabilisers if the ground is uneven.
  • Avoid placing ladders on slippery or soft surfaces.
  1. Open the Ladder Fully ( A Frame, Multi Purpose, Dual purpose)

Make sure the spreaders (the locking arms) are straight and locked.

  1. Make sure any latches are in the locked position.
  2. Use the 4:1 Rule (for extension ladders)
  • For every 4 metres of height, place the base 1 metre out from the wall.
  • Ensure the ladder extends at least 1 metre above the landing point if accessing a roof or platform.
  • Make sure the clutch is engaged and the pulley rope is in good working order.
  1. Secure the Ladder
  • Tie off or secure the top and bottom if the ladder

Use a ladder stopper or stabiliser to secure the base

For roofing work, safety and stability are critical. The right ladder depends on the height of the roof, the surface you’re working on, and how often you’ll be using it. Here’s a guide to help you choose:

  1. Extension Ladder
  •  Ideal for accessing the roof from the ground
  • Choose a ladder that extends at least 1 metre above the roofline
  • Use the 4:1 rule for safe setup (1 metre out for every 4 metres up)
  • Add a ladder stabiliser or standoff to prevent damage to gutters and improve stability
  1. Roof Hooks with Straight Single Ladder
  • Available as an accessory designed to be attached to a straight single ladder and hooked over the roof apex.
  • Prevents slipping while working on sloped surfaces
  1. Roofers Harness Kit
  • For roofing work, a Roofers Harness Kit is essential for safety when working at heights.
  1. Platform Ladder (for gutter or edge work)
  • Self-supporting with a wide standing platform
  • Great for working at the roof edge or eaves
  • Offers more comfort and stability than a standard step ladder or extension ladder.

Platform ladders are generally considered safer than standard stepladders, especially for tasks that require:

  • Extended time at height
  • Frequent movement.
  • Use of tools or materials

Key Safety Benefits:

  • Stable Standing Surface: A wide, flat platform allows you to stand securely with both feet fully supported.
  • Hands-Free Work: The platform design enables you to work with both hands free, improving efficiency and reducing strain.
  • Reduced Fatigue: More comfortable for long-duration tasks like painting, electrical work, or maintenance
  • Added Features: Many brands have optional accessories, including castors, tool trays, safety gates, and handrails.

Ideal for professionals and DIYers who value comfort, stability, and safety while working at height.

Ladder safety training is essential for preventing accidents and ensuring compliance with workplace safety standards. Here are the best practices for effective ladder safety training.

  1. Understand Regulations
  • Train workers on relevant Australian Standards (AS/NZS 1892)
  1. Types of Ladders and Their Uses
  • Educate on different ladder types (Aluminium VS Fibreglass; Step, Extension and Platform Ladders, etc.).
  1. Pre-Use Inspection Training

Teach users to inspect ladders before each use:

  • Check for cracks, bent rungs, loose bolts, or worn feet.
  • Ensure labels and load ratings are visible and legible
  • Confirm the ladder is clean and dry
  1. Safe Setup Practices
  • Place ladders on stable level ground
  • Maintain a 4:1 angle for extension ladders (1 metre out for every 4 metres up).
  • Secure the ladder at the top or bottom if possible.
  • Avoid placing ladders near doorways or high-traffic areas without barriers
  1. Proper Climbing and Ladder use
  • Always face the ladder and maintain three points of contact.
  • Don’t carry tools in your hands – use a tool belt or hoist.
  • Never stand on the top rung.
  • Always stay centred and keep your body within the ladder’s side rails.
  • Do not exceed Load limits
  1. Documentation and Refresher Training
  • Keep records of all training sessions.
  • Provide refresher training annually.
  1. Tailored Training for Workplaces
  • Customise training based on the type of work, ladder use, and environment (e.g., indoor vs outdoor, electrical work, confined spaces, type of ladders used)

Talk to us, and we can arrange training as part of your annual Ladder Inspection Program.
